The
Petro Marine Services/Petersburg terminal supplies complete services
to marine, aviation and home heating fuel customers in Petersburg,
which is at the north end of Mitkof Island at the north entrance to
the Wrangell Narrows. Known as "Little Norway", Petersburg
developed around a salmon cannery and sawmill built in 1897-99 by
Peter Buschmann. The community has a strong tradition of fishing,
and many residents today still depend on the bounty of Alaska's Southeast
waters for their livelihoods.
